Rob Bowen successfully ran Facilities Integration for 12 years. He led this pharmaceutical-focused consultancy, based in the UK, specializing in masterplanning, concept design and design development.
Rob spent 50 years as a practicing Architect, more than 30 years of which involved specializing in the design of complex specialist facilities.
Before founding the consultancy he was principal architect for Fluor Manufacturing and Life Sciences in Europe for nine years and prior to that with AMEC Projects for seven years.
Rob’s portfolio of work runs from R+D laboratories and specialist facilities through to designing clean manufacturing facilities for API and secondaries, packaging and distribution for chemical, biopharmaceutical, oral solid dose primary and secondaries and, more recently, ATMP projects, for generics and mainstream pharmaceutical companies in the UK, many European countries and the Near and Far East.
He is a past research fellow of the University of Warwick on an oral solid dose continuous processing study focused on smart facility designs. The overall study won the UK IChemE Outstanding and Project awards for 2012 for GSK, GEA, Siemens, Sagentia, and Warwick, Surrey and Newcastle universities.
He is a past director of the UK Affiliate board.
He has spoken on the urgent need for development of sustainable manufacturing facilities and the holistic introduction of sustainable technologies into the pharmaceutical industrial environment. In this respect he is a committee member of the Sustainable Facilities, HVAC and Controlled Environments COP and led the ISPE Handbook: Sustainability with Nick Haycocks. He has written several articles on continuous processing and sustainability, including for the PDA Letter and for Pharmaceutical Engineering. He was a chapter lead on the 2013 ISPE Biopharmaceutical Facility Guide and has spoken at the UK IMechE on cleanroom topics, at the ISPE AM, ISPE UK Affiliate and APV events in the US, UK and Europe.
Currently he is a member of the steering committee of the ISPEUK/IMechE/IChemE sustainability in pharma initiative and heads their Dissemination team
